WAHINGTON, DC (March 11, 2003): MAGNUM has long supported the belief that migraine is a neurological disease and is pleased to bring to your attention the exciting work being done on an effective migraine prevention protocol being referred to as Gut Brain Therapy.

Gut Brain Therapy is a nutritional supplement approach focused on improved digestion and improved elimination. While you may wonder what that has to do with migraine the gut/brain connection is the subject of some fascinating research in the field of neurogastroenterology. Michael Gershon, MD’s seminal work on the subject The Second Brain suggests that understanding the neurological function in the gut may lead to answers to both gastrointestinal problems as well as neurological diseases.

ForeverWell, Ltd. conducted a study of 40 migraine sufferers using a novel approach to treatment. The study was published in Alternative Medicine Review, a leading peer-reviewed integrative medical journal. Their preventive approach is unique and was recognized by the granting of a patent by the US Patent Office (Patent Number 6,517,832).

At the conclusion of the 90 day trial 60% of the participants were no longer getting headaches, 20% had a significant reduction in the duration and frequency of their attacks, and 20% had no improvement. Study participants were required to have at least a one year history of no less than two migraines per month. Two nutritional products were utilized, one designed to improve digestive function and the other designed to improve elimination.

ForeverWell utilized the Migraine Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire as their study instrument. The MSQ is a well established and scientifically valid instrument for quantifying the effects of any migraine treatment protocol.

The protocol utilized was a reflection of a belief that migraine is caused by the body’s inability to obtain all the nutrients it needs due to poor digestive function, or the body’s inability to effectively eliminate the waste and toxins it cannot use. By providing targeted nutritional support to these two critical functions excellent results were obtained.

The study authors included James Sensenig, ND, Jeffrey Marrongelle, DC, CCN, Mark Johnson, BS and Thomas Staverosky, BS. Dr Sensenig is the founding president of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians and a professor of Medical History and Naturopathic Philosophy at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Arizona. Dr. Marrongelle in addition to being a chiropractor and Certified Clinical Nutritionist is also a Doctor of Integrated Medicine and on the board of Capital University.
