Michael has exhibited his artwork and lectured on Migraine and art internationally, most recently were an exhibit last year in Rome, Italy, as well as recently lectured in Istanbul, Turkey this past summer. For those of you are not familiar with MAGNUM and what they do for the American people, you may be interested to note that they were the first medical NGO to address Migraine as a neurological brain disease a decade ago. The non-profit was founded by Old Towns own Michael John Coleman, former Torpedo Factory artist and nationally known photographer, along with co-founder Terri Miller Burchfield, former Congressional investigator. The two formed the non-government organization (NGO) in 1993 due to severe Migraine disease hardships Coleman had endured due to his debilitating episodic disability. Burchfield, also is a Migraineur, suffers occasional attacks while Colemans Migraines are intractable. The two have taken the non-profit from working locally out of the back of Principle Gallery, to an well known international NGO featured on the cover of the FDA Consumer Magazine and now is operating out of their headquarters office on South Saint Asaph Street, in the Washington, DC Old Town Alexandria community. MAGNUM represented the United States a few years ago at the World Health Organization (WHO) while the WHO drafted its Blue Book Report on the severe impact of Migraine and headache disorders as a major world health issue. Just last year MAGNUM worked with the White House and was issued the first ever policy letter from President Bush, the first U.S. President to issue such a letter on Migraine as a major public health issue. MAGNUM staff hand-carried the official letter from President George W. Bush to the International Headache Congress (IHC) 2001 in New York City. MAGNUM has also worked closely with many important leaders in government and medical affairs. From Tipper Gore, to former Speaker Newt Gingrich, to current leader list Senators Bill Frist, M.D. (R-TN), John Warner (R-VA), Barbara A. Mikulski (D-MD), Paul S. Sarbanes (D-MD), George Allen (R-VA); and Congresspersons James P. Moran (D-VA), Frank R. Wolf (R-VA), Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Cliff Stearns (R-FL), and Thomas M. Davis (R-VA) to name a few key government leaders. MAGNUM also works with the nations best Migraine disease thought leaders such as Drs. Fred Sheftell (Director New England Center for Headache), Richard Lipton (former President of AHS), Joel Saper (Director MHNI), and Merle Diamond (Chairman NHF).
