The Alexandria based non- profit health care public education organization, MAGNUM, Inc. (Migraine Awareness Group; a National Understanding for Migraineurs), along with many others in the medical community, had a sigh of relief last month. Happy knowing the work they did over the summer with House and Senate offices to convince them to retain language in the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 which included "severe pain" in the prudent layperson definition of an "emergency medical condition" for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries was signed into law by President Clinton last month. Speaking from their new offices in a two hundred year old historic building at 113 South Saint Asaph Street, MAGNUM Legislative Director Terri Miller Burchfield stated; "We are pleased to have received assistance on this matter from certain U.S. Congressional offices, in particular those of Senators Paul Coverdell and Charles Robb and Speaker Newt Gingrich." It's been a busy summer for MAGNUM starting with several features on broadcast TV for its role in educating the public and Congress on Migraine disease, in the first ever Migraine disease awareness event on Capitol Hill. The event, The Spring Capitol Hill Migraine Disease Awareness Exhibit, which was held in the Cannon Rotunda of the U.S. Congress House Office Building and was sponsored by the Congressional Caucus for Woman's Issues, ran though Memorial Day. This highly successful show was curated by Old Town's Principle Gallery at Gilpin House at 208 King Street. The event had the generous support of GlaxoWellcome, makers other anti-Migraine drug Imitrex. The event program featured letters of support from Congressman James P. Moran, Senator Charles Robb and Speaker Newt Gingrich. CBS's W*USA~TV anchor Bob Althage passionately described the artwork by feature artists BJ, Anderson, Michael John Coleman and Janet Mckenzie during the airing. MAGNUM choose to keep its headquarters here in Old Town due to the tremendous support they have received from the medical and local business community. Support like the grants awarded by the leaders in the anti-Migraine drug field from the likes of Merck, Carnrick Labs, GlaxoWellcome, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Novarartis Pharmaceutical and most recently they were offered support by Zeneca Pharmaceutical. Local businesses, like the Principle Gallery, continue to support the community featuring the Third Annual Small Works Migraine Disease Awareness show scheduled for December. P. Elizabeth Pirsch's Law Firm, has been very involved offering its legal ex- pertise in charitable organzations. Larger local firms such as the Clio award winning internet service provider Proxicom Inc., featured in Forbes magazine, has shared its ex- pertise in developing MAGNUM's highly informative and visual Web site www.migraines.org.
