MIGRAINE AWARENESS GROUP: M.A.G.N.U.M.

A nonprofit health care organization conceived in 1993, MAGNUM offers an outstanding array of information for America's estimated 26 million migraine sufferers. Though the site can be slow to load, the bicoastal list of migraine and headache clinics, drug profiles, alternative treatments and questions to ask your doctor are worth the wait. Migraine sufferers should click on Disability & Impairment to read articles on coping with migraines at home and work. Myth and Reality dispels common fallacies about migraines.

JAMA MIGRAINE INFORMATION CENTER

The Journal of the American Medical Association offers something for everyone, from minor tension headache remedies to emergency room procedures for severe migraine sufferers. For those who feel a bit intimidated by some of the highly technical abstracts of migraine articles, JAMA provides an Education & Support Center that lists support and information groups and provides brief explanations for a variety of topics, from Migraine Management to the Treatment of Cluster Headaches.

HEADACHES

Pain relief is the focus of this appealing site. The Brief History of Headache Treatment is an amusing look at ancient remedies such as trephination--removing small pieces of the skull to let out evil spirits. Today's more fortunate patients can click on any of the site's subsections--which include sinus, cluster, tension, alcohol-induced and migraine headaches--for quick descriptions and potential causes. OTC Medication and Alternative Therapies lay out a variety of possible solutions.

HEADACHE CYBERTEXT

Do children have the same kinds of headaches as adults? Could your headache be the result of a brain tumor? Created by Dr. David Haas, this site primarily addresses the diagnosis and treatment of the five most common headache types doctors encounter. Visitors can also investigate an archive of articles on the causes and treatments of less common headache types, such as exertional and cough.

CLUSTERHEADACHES.COM

There are no doctors here, but this community of cluster headache sufferers provides something just as important as medical information: support from people who understand. Try the Cluster Quiz to see if you really are experiencing cluster headaches (pain that occurs in regular "cluster" periods and may last for minutes to several hours). Questions, comments and personal connections can be found on the message board and in scheduled chats. Keep in mind that this is not a substitute for medical advice.

THE AMERICAN COUNCIL FOR HEADACHE EDUCATION

This site helps answer crucial questions for headache sufferers by offering tips on prevention and treatment, a migraine disability assessment questionnaire, medication charts and a searchable physician directory for headache specialists in your area. Tune in to find out how to tell the difference between headaches and migraines and why caffeine--which may lead to headaches--is in painkillers.

THE ELECTRONIC HEADACHE SUPPORT GROUP

This simple site offers quick and helpful strategies to reduce headaches, including lifestyle changes, food sensitivities and other environmental factors as possible culprits. Though the discussion forum has been temporarily shut down, visitors can check out the Headache Survival Guide. This section explains your rights as a sufferer and offers tips for dealing with doctors and insurance companies.
