Bournemouth, 9th August 2001 - Jo Liddell, Honorary President of the UK Migraine Action Association (MAA) and resident of Bournemouth, received the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson (EGA) Award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the cause for patient empowerment in headache.

The EGA award, established by the World Headache Alliance (WHA) and sponsored by an unrestricted educational grant from GlaxoSmithKline, seeks to recognize a female whose work over time has made an extraordinary contribution to relieving those affected by the burden of headache.

The international award was accepted on behalf of JO Liddell by Ann Turner, Director of the MAA at the International Headache Congress in New York on 29th June. The award is accompanied by £5,000 which will be donated to the MAA with the funds being directed to the Bournemouth group.

Today at the Royal Bath Hotel in Bournemouth, Ann Turner, on her return from New York presented the donation to Dora Walker, President of the Bournemouth MAA. On accepting the donation Dora Walker said, "We are thrilled that JO has received recognition for all the work she has done over the years for the MAA. In the 16 years that I have known JO she has given so much of herself and her time and has always been there for people who want to talk about their headaches. It is also a great honor that the award has come to Bournemouth, where the MAA was founded 43 years ago."

JO Liddell earned widespread respect among the medical profession, the media and migraineurs themselves. An impressive patient advocate, JO has spoken at public meetings across the world, talking to sufferers, working extensively with medical professionals, and writing articles for medical journals. Her influence extends worldwide, having supported many other patient groups and international migraine associations.

A lifelong migraineur, JO read and consulted widely, building extensive knowledge and earning the respect of specialists in the field.

Jo's involvement with the Migraine Action Association (formerly the British Migraine Association) began in 1978 when she attended a meeting of the local group in Bournemouth. She felt so welcome she immediately joined the group and became Chairman two years later. Subsequently, she was invited to join the committee of the MAA and carried out positions of Secretary, Director and finally Honorary President of the national association. The MAA is a charity run by sufferers, for sufferers and has over 17,000 members. Bridging the gap between the migraine sufferer and the medical world it provides information on all aspects of the condition and its management. The association offers support to patients and their families and encourages research and investigation into migraine and its causes.

JO Liddell commented, "I am extremely pleased to receive this award. Migraine is a miserable condition which initially drove me to seek help and become involved with the Bournemouth Migraine Action Association and then the national association. I hope the work I have done will continue to help people and allow them to have the same support I received."

The award is named in honor of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, the first female physician and woman mayor in England. An expert in the field of migraine, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson founded a London dispensary for women and children in 1866, which was later converted into a hospital for women - The New Hospital for Women. Upon her death, it was renamed the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital.
